Based merely on Donald Trump’s actions, and the ways in which some world leaders have flaunted it, it’s long been fairly clear that they’ve been using some form of blackmail to get him to do his bidding. But now Trump is facing a much more immediate and blatant form of blackmail, and it comes complete with a public ransom note and a demand for cash.

In a story that started with gossip publication Page Six but has since been picked up by more solid news outlets, some cyber hacking group claims to have obtained the dirty secrets of several public figures by hacking into a law firm which represents them. The most high profile client involved: Donald Trump.

It’s not clear just what the hackers are sitting on, or how damaging it is. But they’re demanding a $42 million ransom in exchange for not releasing it. The law firm itself says it has no interest in paying up, which is probably because they’re not the real target. If these clients’ dirty secrets are released, it’s the clients who will primarily suffer.

So it’s not a stretch to say that these hackers are actually blackmailing Donald Trump and the other clients, as they’re the ones who will pay up to keep these secrets quiet, if anyone. Of course this kind of ransom demand is illegal, and it’s probably a dumb idea to openly try to blackmail the President of the United States. We’ll see if they get busted before they can reveal Trump’s secrets. But this is the latest reminder that when you have a dirty corrupt U.S. President, he’s an incredibly ripe target for blackmail. Just ask Vladimir Putin.
