The thing about an unraveling criminal conspiracy is that as the ugly details surface, some participants begin to feel betrayed at other participants, and turn on each other accordingly. This week we saw Donald Trump inexplicably release a pair of documents which not only incriminate himself and Rudy Giuliani, but also Attorney General Bill Barr. Now we’re seeing what a mistake Trump made by throwing Barr under the bus.

Bill Barr is “surprised and angry” at Donald Trump for throwing him under the bus, according to a new report today from the AP. This is sourced to a person familiar with Barr’s thinking, which means that Barr himself is the source. We’ve seen Barr play this sourcing game with various media outlets in the past, and now he’s doing it again.

In other words, Barr is making a point of very publicly letting Trump know that he’s pissed off at him, and no longer trusts him. Barr is also giving away that he’s worried about his own fate in all this. That’s a problem for Trump, for a few reasons. First, because Barr has been Trump’s criminal henchman for several months now, Barr knows many of Trump’s dirtiest secrets.

Also, if Bill Barr no longer trusts Donald Trump to have his back, it means that Barr can’t trust that a Trump pardon is coming to bail him out of all the obstruction crimes that Barr has committed. This leaves Barr with few options. One of them would be to try to cut an immunity deal which involves him recusing himself (or resigning), and turning over everything he has on Trump to the House impeachment inquiry. We’ll see what he does next, but Barr isn’t leaking this for no reason.
