Plan A for Donald Trump is to win the election outright. Plan B for Trump is to lose by such a close margin that he can cheat his way over the line. But as we get closer to election day and Trump’s pathetic numbers still aren’t improving, Plan A and Plan B are closer to going out the window. Trump just tipped off that he knows it.

Donald Trump is now resorting to Plan C, which is to simply declare that he’s going to win no matter what. During his press conference today, Trump refused to commit to peacefully leaving office if he loses, and he vowed to “get rid of the ballots” instead. If you have greater than a kindergarten level understanding of politics, you know that Trump can’t actually do this. Nothing is so magically simplistic. So why is Trump bothering to make such false threats?

By pushing the notion that he’s going magically win no matter what, Trump is hoping to discourage everyone from bothering to vote against him, and discourage everyone from bothering to put in the routine work required to seal the victory. It’s the most basic and simplistic of psych-outs. Either you choose to gullibly fall for it, or you choose to shrug off Trump’s empty threats and you get back to working on things that will actually have an impact on the outcome: voter registration, phone banking, and volunteering.
