On Friday, among the many demented things Donald Trump decided to tweet, we got a glimpse into his election strategy for this fall, after he falsely accused Chuck Schumer of raising taxes for most New Yorkers, when in reality this increase was the direct result of a tax law Trump signed. That’s not too unusual for Donald Trump, but the problem is this guy somehow thought it was an appropriate way to dodge Schumer’s request for more testing.

“Cryin Chuck Schumer, compared to what other Senators have brought home to their states, has brought very little back to N.Y. A totally overrated loser, the one thing he has given them is SALT,” Trump tweeted. “He never even called me to stop it. No wonder Cuomo & most others can’t stand him.” He then ended the tweet by typing Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s initials for some reason. I guess because she lives in New York too?

He’s referring to state and local tax deductions that Republicans capped when they signed Donald Trump’s tax bill back in 2017 – a move that significantly hit blue states where taxes are higher, which every Senate Democrat voted against and continues to fight.

There’s a reason Republicans aren’t so sure about giving it up either: They know that the cap can work to undermine Democratic state governors and their legislatures. Trump and the GOP are aware that suburban voters have turned against them and are voting them out in droves, so we can expect them to play this card well into November.
