Donald Trump has been at profound risk of being taken down by his scandals from the moment he was named the winner of the election. Between his treasonous plot with Russia to rig the election, and his decades of financial crimes, the spotlight of the Oval Office was bound to eventually burn a hole right through him – but he seemed to have been in denial about it. Now one prominent Republican pundit thinks Trump has finally figured out how screwed he is.

Last night Trump used a New York Times interview to publicly threaten to fire Special Counsel Robert Mueller if he dares to investigate Trump’s finances. This led longtime Republican political strategist Rick Wilson to express the following view: “His attacks on Mueller tell me a lot. He KNOWS how bad it is. His ‘warning’ to Mueller tells me [he] finally understands how bad it is.” (link). Wilson has long been no fan of Trump, but he calls it like he sees it. And he’s not the only political pundit who came to this conclusion last night.

Liberal leaning Harvard Professor Laurence Tribe came to a similar conclusion after reading Trump’s interview with the Times: “Threatening to fire Mueller if M looks into Junior’s or Kushner’s finances is a dead giveaway that the jig is up.” (link). So where does this leave us with regard to what Donald Trump does next, and what happens to him next?

Moments after it published the Trump interview, the New York Times turned around and posted a story revealing that Special Counsel Robert Mueller is indeed investigating Donald Trump’s finances. That’s been followed up by another report today that Mueller is investigating Trump campaign chair Paul Manafort for Russian money laundering, which is likely to lead back to Trump as well. And so Trump was right to be worried: his financial crimes may take him down before his election crimes can.
