In a sign of how ugly the Trump-Russia scandal is getting for those caught up in it, and how close Special Counsel Robert Mueller is to bringing down the entire house of cards, Donald Trump’s oldest friend Roger Stone tried a desperate tactic today: he partially confessed. This promptly triggered Trump, who began attacking the news outlet Stone confessed to. But as it became clear just how ugly this new bombshell is, Trump ended up having a late night meltdown.

Stone revealed to the Washington Post earlier today that during the election, while he was serving as an informal Donald Trump campaign adviser, he met with a Russian who was offering dirt on Hillary Clinton. Stone ultimately turned him down after he asked for $2 million in exchange for this dirt. Stone also claims he told the Russian that he wasn’t going to get paid because Trump doesn’t pay for anything, a clear sign that Stone felt he was acting on Trump’s behalf when he took the meeting.

By late evening, Trump seemed to have figured out that Roger Stone is partially confessing as a desperate last ditch move because he’s about to get indicted and arrested. This sent Trump into a tirade tonight. He tweeted “Why was the FBI giving so much information to the Fake News Media. They are not supposed to be doing that, and knowing the enemy of the people Fake News, they put their own spin on it – truth doesn’t matter to them!”

Donald Trump then went on to attack FBI agent Peter Strzok, who has just been cleared of any criminal wrongdoing by the Inspector General report, calling him a “sick loser” and making false claims about him. Then Trump began yelling at the Democrats and insisting that “you are going to lose!” The nature of Trump’s meltdown tonight may be less important than the timing; he rarely has late night Twitter meltdowns, and it’s typically a sign that he’s particularly rattled by the day’s developments.
