Back when Donald Trump’s Russia scandal started to get particularly ugly for him a month ago, he began planting stories in the media about how he might not seek reelection. It seemed to be an attempt at saying “Don’t impeach me, I’m not sticking around for the long haul anyway.” Now that Michael Flynn has sold out Trump and his presidency is on its last legs, he appears to be using his ex-wife to push the notion that he might leave office even sooner.

Although Donald and Ivana Trump divorced decades ago, they still appear to communicate regularly; she was at his inauguration. Now, just two days after Donald learned that Michael Flynn is indeed negotiating a plea deal against him, suddenly Ivana is talking to the media on his behalf (link). She’s saying things like “I think he’s missing a little bit of his old life” and “I think he must be freaking exhausted.” The question is why she’s suddenly saying these things publicly now.

Earlier this year, Ivana said a series of controversial things about Melania Trump in an attempt to bring attention to the book she had just released. But this time around, Ivana doesn’t appear to gain anything by making these kinds of comments. Instead, it feels more like she’s spoken with Donald since he learned of the Flynn news, and he really is looking to lay the groundwork for his possible resignation, and she’s helping him to lay that groundwork. If that sounds like it may be a stretch, consider Donald’s latest tweet.

On Sunday, just one day after Ivana Trump pushed the notion that Donald Trump might be ready to leave office, he tweeted “Since the first day I took office, all you hear is the phony Democrat excuse for losing the election, Russia, Russia,Russia. Despite this I have the economy booming and have possibly done more than any 10 month President. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!” Suddenly he’s pushing the idea that he’s accomplished more in ten months than anyone else ever has – seemingly trying to establish the notion that he’s already succeeded and therefore he’s free to leave. Keep an eye on this.
