Donald Trump seemed to have found a novel way to not only get the Senate to confirm his pick for FBI Director, but to essentially put his own lawyers in charge of both sides of the Trump-Russia investigation: he was going to appoint former Senator Joe Lieberman as Director. But that plan has now officially gone down in flames.

Although both parties in the Senate have expressed skepticism at the idea of confirming any Trump pick to be the new head of the FBI while the Russia investigation is still playing out, particularly after Trump admitted he fired the last FBI Director to try to sabotage the Russia investigation, Trump seemed to think he could call their bluff by nominating one of their own former colleagues. But now we’ll never get to find out whether the Senate would have approved Joe Lieberman, because he’s now out of the running (CBS News), having officially withdrawn his name from contention.

Lieberman’s candidacy has gone down in flames in part because everyone involved finally figured out what Donald Trump’s strategy had been with him all along. Yesterday, Trump hired attorney Marc Kasowitz to personally represent him in the Trump-Russia scandal. But it turns out Lieberman is a senior counsel at Kasowitz’s law firm. So even if Lieberman resigned from the firm, it would mean that current and outgoing attorneys from that firm would be in charge of defending and investigating Trump’s Russia scandal.

Once that was fully exposed yesterday, it appeared to be the end of Joe Lieberman’s shot at becoming FBI Director. So it wasn’t a shock to see him pull his name today. But it does raise the question of what stunt Trump might try next, as the Russia scandal continues to close in on him. Follow Palmer Report on Facebook and Twitter.
