Either Donald Trump honestly believes that his historically low approval rating has somehow magically fixed itself, or he wants you believe it. That’s the only conclusion that can be drawn from his tweet today in which he bragged about a comically fake poll number, falsely claiming that he’s now more popular than President Obama – even as his real polls numbers show that his presidency is bottoming out.

Trump tweeted the following this morning: “The new Rasmussen Poll, one of the most accurate in the 2016 Election, just out with a Trump 50% Approval Rating. That’s higher than O’s #’s!” (link). In reality, Rasmussen is a widely discredited poll, whose methods have been exposed as fraudulent going back years (link). So the 50% number isn’t merely an outlier; it’s a fake poll number. Where is Trump in actuality?

If you start by pulling up the latest Donald Trump approval rating numbers from various major polling listed on RealClearPolitics (link), and then you remove the phony Rasmussen poll, and then you add in the new Associated Press poll (link) which for some reason isn’t yet listed on RealClearPolitics, you end up with a current average approval rating of 37% to 38%. While individual polls have posted even lower numbers as low as 34% or 35% along the way, this is the lowest that Trump’s average has been to date.

The question is whether Donald Trump is even aware of this. Is he so sheltered from real news from his advisers that he honestly believes his failed presidency is somehow popular with Americans? Or is he aware that he’s the most unpopular new president in U.S. history, and he’s floating a fake poll number in the hope of keeping his base from figuring out he’s finished? In any case, Trump still hasn’t bothered to say anything about the seven U.S. Navy sailors who died last night; he’s still too busy tweeting fake polls.
