Just three days after Donald Trump fired Steve Bannon from the White House, it’s become clear that Bannon isn’t planning to play nice, as he had initially hinted, and as Trump had clearly been hoping. Instead, Bannon and his site Breitbart are coming out swinging at everyone from Trump on down. Yesterday saw the first round of salvos, and it was fairly ugly. But as of today Breitbart is already talking about working with the Republican Party to get Trump impeached.

The first sign of serious bad blood came on Sunday afternoon when Breitbart published an article accusing Trump’s National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster of being a terrorist sympathizer. Then things escalated further on Sunday night when the site published an article which asked in its headline if Trump might be suffering from a mental illness. But today things took a much sharper turn toward all out war between Bannon and Trump.

Much as we would rather not be quoting alt-crazy sites in general (and as per policy we refuse to provide links to them), their actions and behavior at this particular point in time are telling of where things are headed next for Trump. Steve Bannon is now officially back in charge of Breitbart, and he was unofficially running it from within the White House even before he got fired. Nothing happens at Breitbart unless Bannon wants it to. And so when a Breitbart staffer told the conservative Washington Examiner that Breitbart is prepared to help Paul Ryan find the votes to impeach Donald Trump, it was coming directly from Bannon.

This is a stunning development. Steve Bannon has long hated Paul Ryan and wanted to oust him as Speaker of the House. But at this point Bannon is signaling his willingness to choose Ryan over Trump, if Trump veers away from Bannon’s agenda. Seeing how Trump has already gone against Bannon’s wishes with his Afghanistan speech tonight, this could get ugly for Trump fast.
