House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes announced today that he’s removing himself from his own committee’s investigation into Donald Trump’s Russia scandal, even as two other House bodies announced they’re investigating Nunes for the improper actions he’s taken during his own investigation (source: ABC News). It’s a swift fall for a fourteen year Congressman whose career is now suddenly in ruins. But he’s far from the first sucker to realize too late that sociopaths like Donald Trump don’t have friends.
Take a cursory look at Donald Trump’s relatively brief history in politics. Here’s a partial list of Trump’s own loyal political allies whom he’s fired, demoted, nudged into resignation, failed to give an expected job to, or otherwise suckered or scapegoated, simply because it just happened to suit his own interest at the time: Corey Lewandowski. Paul Manafort. Newt Gingrich. Michael Flynn. Katrina Pierson. Chris Christie. Carter Page. Rudy Giuliani. Mitt Romney. And most recently, the demoted Steve Bannon.
That’s just the short list of some of the most prominent names of people who were loyal to Donald Trump and his political ambitions, who thought they were his friend, and who ended up in a ditch because of it. Some of the above people are still clinging to lesser jobs than he had promised them, or clinging to no job at all, because they still gullibly believe Trump is eventually going to come through for them.
So while Devin Nunes is a bleeping idiot in his own right, that much wasn’t necessary for his downfall. Some of the people on the above list of Trump’s loyal victims are rather intelligent. Some of them are savvy enough to have survived in politics for decades, before they entered Trump’s realm and he destroyed them. Even Nunes had been hanging in there in Congress and slowly moving up the ranks since 2003, until he was suckered into joining the Trump transition team so he could be manipulated into mishandling the inevitable Russia investigation. And now – voila – Nunes is suddenly so washed up he’ll probably get primaried out his seat by someone from his own party before he can even get to the midterm general election.
All it takes to get destroyed by Donald Trump is to be ambitiously gullible enough to believe him when he says he’ll take care of you if you lay down on the tracks for him. His loyal allies all know he’s lying every time he opens his mouth, but they’re just that desperate to believe what he’s promising them. Nunes is just the latest career on that scrapheap.
