On January 20, 2017, Michael Richard Pence became the 48th Vice President of the United States. Prior to this position, he had been the Governor of Indiana, a radio broadcaster and a member of the US House of Representatives. He refers to himself as being a Christian, a conservative and a Republican in that order. Many of his policies have been based on this description.

In an article that Pence wrote in 2000, he stated “Time for a quick reality check, despite the hysteria from the political class and the media, smoking doesn’t kill. In fact, 2 out of every three smokers do not die from a smoking related illness and 9 out of ten smokers do not contract lung cancer.” While running for Congress in 2000, Pence wrote on his website that money funding research for HIV/AIDS should be moved to fund conversion therapy, “which provide assistance to those seeking to change their sexual behavior.”

Mike Pence, while hosting his radio show, used a Disney movie to argue that women are unfit to serve in the military. Mulan’s romance with a superior officer proved that women cannot serve. The Disney film “Mulan” was based on a 6th century Ballad of Mulan. In 2006, as head of the Republican Study Committee, he stated that societal collapse has always been caused by same-sex relationships. He proposed a law that would make it legal to discriminate against the LGBT community in the workplace. He opposed the repeal of the “Don’t ask, don’t tell” law. He rejected the Obama directive on transgender bathrooms.
While governor of Indiana, Pence was blamed for an HIV crisis in his state after he moved to slash the funding of Planned Parenthood in 2011. Facilities had to close due to budget cuts. Many of these facilities were the only source of testing in areas in the throes of epidemic drug use which caused the HIV outbreak. While most Palmer Report readers want Trump out of the White House, I don’t believe that we would settle for Michael Richard Pence as an acceptable replacement.
