Donald Trump and his White House went to great lengths to prevent former acting Attorney General Sally Yates from testifying before Congress about his Russia scandal, but it Yates and former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper ended up testifying jointly today anyway, in public hearings. Now that they’ve revealed just how suspiciously Trump handled the Michael Flynn scandal, Trump is predictably having a Twitter meltdown about it.

Here’s what stands out. Whenever Trump’s Russia scandal comes back into focus, he most often responds by trying to change the subject, even if it means dredging up an old unrelated controversy about himself. But this time Trump couldn’t help himself, and decided to flat out lie about what Yates and Clapper had just finished saying on national television.

First there was this gem: “Director Clapper reiterated what everybody, including the fake media already knows- there is “no evidence” of collusion w/ Russia and Trump” (link). With this tweet, Trump fully misrepresented the fact that Clapper retired six months ago, and merely testified that he hadn’t seen such evidence before he left. Then there was this weird tweet: “Sally Yates made the fake media extremely unhappy today — she said nothing but old news!” (link). Who’s he even expecting to fall for that one, considering millions just watched Yates share new revelations on national television.

Then Trump tried to paint the whole thing as a partisan charade, even though today’s hearings were instigated by Republican Senator Lindsey Graham: “The Russia-Trump collusion story is a total hoax, when will this taxpayer funded charade end?” (link). Finally, Trump resorted to trying to paint this all as some kind of President Obama scandal: “Biggest story today between Clapper & Yates is on surveillance. Why doesn’t the media report on this?” But Trump is just recycling old lies that didn’t work the first time he told them. He’s clearly scared about the repercussions of today’s new revelations – and what’s to come next. Help fund Palmer Report
