In the past weeks, Donald Trump has been publicly and privately picking fights with a growing list of Republican Party leaders. He’s angry at them for not passing his disastrous TrumpCare bill. He blames them for his lack of accomplishments. And he’s outraged that they won’t protect him in his Russia scandal. Trump’s hit list has included everyone from Mitch McConnell to Lindsey Graham to John McCain. And here comes his vicious attack on Paul Ryan.

Last night Trump tried to sneak in his pardon of racist criminal Joe Arpaio during a Friday night news dump in the middle of a major hurricane. But it didn’t go unnoticed. Some Democratic and Republican Senators, including both Senators from Arpaio’s state of Arizona, have been publicly condemning the pardon (link). And now Republican Speaker of the House Paul Ryan has found a bit of a spine.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Paul Ryan’s spokesman has said “The speaker does not agree with the decision. Law-enforcement officials have a special responsibility to respect the rights of everyone in the United States. We should not allow anyone to believe that responsibility is diminished by this pardon.” (link). Constitutionally, there is nothing that Congress can to do stop a pardon. But we all know what’s coming next, and it won’t be pretty.

One morning soon, Donald Trump will wake up and begin viciously attacking Paul Ryan via Twitter. But we’ll see how quickly it comes. After influential Republican Senator Bob Corker publicly questioned Trump’s mental stability, it appeared to take Trump eight days to get word of it, based on his reaction time. Ryan’s pushback against the pardon, and the amount of time it ends up taking Trump to get word of it and attack Ryan for it, will serve as a barometer of just how cut off from real news and the real world Trump has become.
