Donald Trump is in deep, deep trouble. His approval rating is historically low. His scandals are exploding. The demise of his presidency is inevitable, if not necessarily imminent. But now comes the question of the endgame in terms of how Trump leaves office, who forces him out, and when it happens. And it’s no overstatement to say that the road to Donald Trump’s demise now goes through Georgia congressional candidate Jon Ossoff.

Whether Democratic candidate Jon Ossoff wins or loses by a small margin in this week’s special election, it’ll be a good sign for the Democratic Party and a terrible sign for the Republican Party when it comes to the 2018 midterm races. The GA-06 is a solid red Republican district that voted for Donald Trump, and voted strongly for the Republican Congressional candidate, just six months ago. Even if the Republican candidate barely wins this race, it’ll be a harbinger of just how difficult it’ll be for Republicans to get reelected as Trump continues to drag them down. But watch what happens if Jon Ossoff pulls off a victory.

Up to now, most Republicans in Congress have been acting like deer in the headlights. They know there’s a threshold at which Donald Trump becomes so toxically unpopular that they’ll have to distance themselves from him in order to avoid getting wiped out in the midterms. But the Republicans are disorganized when it comes to standing up to Trump, because the threshold is slightly different for each of them, depending on the makeup of their own state or district. And many of them are in denial about the non-existent possibility that Trump might somehow find a way to turn things around before the midterms. But if a Democrat wins a red congressional district like GA-06 this week, it’ll set off all the panic buttons.

If Jon Ossoff wins on Tuesday, look for a decent number of Republicans in Congress to conclude that the time is now for them to strategically throw Trump under the bus, for fear they’ll lose their own reelection bids if they keep standing by him. It would only take around ten percent of House Republicans to join all of the House Democrats to initiate impeachment hearings. So if you want the GOP to hit the panic button and reluctantly head down the road to Trump’s demise, make sure Jon Ossoff wins this week.
