For all his rabid and whiny attacks on various political and public figures, Donald Trump has seemed consistently afraid to attack Special Counsel Robert Mueller. This is, after all, the guy who is investigating his various crimes and has the power to take him down. But today Trump did start throwing a fit about Mueller on Twitter. Now we know why.

Trump tweeted this: “The Mueller probe should never have been started in that there was no collusion and there was no crime. It was based on fraudulent activities and a Fake Dossier paid for by Crooked Hillary and the DNC, and improperly used in FISA COURT for surveillance of my campaign. WITCH HUNT!” It was easy to figure out that part of Trump’s frustration was due to the Saturday afternoon report that recently-fired FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe had already turned over his notes about Trump’s obstruction of justice, meaning that there was no strategic point to the risky McCabe firing after all. Now it turns out there’s another reason why Trump is suddenly whining about Mueller. It has to do with a move that Mueller made behind the scenes today.

Buried in the twelfth paragraph of a brand new New York Times article, you’ll find this tidbit: “The president’s tweets, posted on a Saturday in which he remained inside the White House with no public schedule, came as Mr. Mueller is said to have sent questions to Mr. Trump’s legal team as part of negotiations over an interview with the president.” (link). In other words, now that Trump has received the questions and realized he’s facing a no-win situation when it comes to the interview, he’s become even more unhinged than usual.

Donald Trump can’t win no matter what he does from here. If he agrees to the interview and tells the truth, he’ll be confessing to his crimes. If he lies during the interview, that’s a felony. If he invokes the Fifth Amendment to avoid the interview, that’ll be the end of him politically.
