Even as Michael Cohen continues to take one move after another to separate himself from Donald Trump, we still don’t have official word on whether he’s formally cut a plea deal. But now Cohen has made a move which is so on-the-nose, we can’t help but almost be impressed at what Cohen just pulled off. We don’t know if Cohen has rolled on Trump, but we do know that Cohen just rickrolled Trump.

Okay, so Michael Cohen didn’t literally trick Donald Trump into watching a Rick Astley video. But instead, Cohen metaphorically rickrolled Trump in a way that’s far more fitting. Now that Cohen is severing his joint legal defense arrangement with Trump, he’s bringing in a new legal team. His latest hire: Lanny Davis, an attorney who used to work in the Bill Clinton White House, and who spent the 2016 election defending Hillary Clinton while attacking Donald Trump. So yeah, Trump’s lawyer just hired Clinton’s lawyer.

Some skeptics have suggested that perhaps Lanny Davis has changed his mind in the decades since his Bill Clinton White House days, and he’s since become a Trump fan. But again, Davis spent the 2016 election defending Hillary. Others have asked if perhaps Davis is simply selling out for a big payday. But keep in mind that Michael Cohen is so broke, he had to use a home equity loan just to make a fairly small payoff to Stormy Daniels. So whatever Davis is getting paid, it can’t be that much, which suggests that he took the gig because he wants to help Cohen take Trump down.

The thing to keep in mind here is that there are whole lot of lawyers out there who could represent Michael Cohen in this case. He’s making a point of choosing a lawyer who famously spent the election advocating for Hillary and attacking Donald Trump. Not only do all signs point to Cohen ending up cutting a plea deal, he keeps sending signals that his growing resentment toward Trump is intensely personal. Cohen wants to stick it to Trump so badly, he’s basing his legal hires on whatever will piss Trump off the most.
