In the months since Donald Trump’s decade-old affair with adult film actress Stormy Daniels became public, Trump has gone out of his way to avoid addressing the matter. Even as he’s attacked everyone from Governors to former Presidents on Twitter, he’s never said a cross word about Daniels, or even acknowledged the existence of the scandal. This morning that all changed, in typically ridiculous fashion. In the process, Trump gave away something crucial.

Yesterday, Stormy Daniels and her attorney released a police sketch of the man she says approached her years ago and threatened her physical well-being if she ever went public about the affair. This morning, Trump went on a Twitter rampage about various topics. One of Trump’s followers replied with a side-by-side image of the police sketch and a photo of Daniels’ ex-boyfriend, claiming that they were the same person, even though they didn’t look all that similar.

Trump immediately retweeted the side-by-side image and added his own commentary: “A sketch years later about a nonexistent man. A total con job, playing the Fake News Media for Fools (but they know it)!” So after months of radio silence about the entire Stormy Daniels saga, from the affair, to the coverup, to six-figure payoff, to the battle over the nondisclosure agreement, to Daniels’ interview on 60 Minutes, Trump suddenly explode at Daniels the minute he sees the police sketch.

Considering Donald Trump’s nature, it’s not difficult to parse what happened: he recognized the person in the police sketch. We still don’t know who it is, but he sure does. His explosive reaction was because he realized in that moment that the entire thing is going to be exposed, as someone out there will figure out that the sketch is of someone connected to him.
