When I said that Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein was playing Donald Trump by pretending to go along with investigating how the FBI was investigating the Trump campaign, I got a fair amount of pushback for it. This was understandable, in the sense that most (though in fairness not all) of the mainstream media was hysterically insisting that Rosenstein had just sold out the country, and that Trump had won a victory that no one in the media could quite define. Now one of Trump’s own people is calling this for what it is: Trump being gullible.

Now that Roger Stone has figured out he’s the next to be arrested in the Trump-Russia scandal, he’s screaming his head off about Trump’s tepid and naive decision to essentially let the Department of Justice investigate itself. Why? Stone is a criminal, and not in his right mind, but he’s not stupid, either. He knows that for Trump’s latest gambit to work, the investigation would need to be in the hands of a capable Trump loyalist willing to lie about the findings. Rosenstein, an honest guy, doesn’t fit that bill.

Yet Trump thinks he’s scored a victory here. He’s deluded himself into believing that President Obama, the FBI, Hillary Clinton, the DOJ, and the Man From Uncle all conspired to rig the election against him. Trump is so far gone, he truly expects this “investigation” to prove that he was the victim here. He’s just that gullible. It’s why Rod Rosenstein keeps pretending to go along with these deranged demands. It’s why even an idiot like Rudy Giuliani has been able to snow Trump. It’s why Trump’s previous lawyers Ty Cobb and John Dowd were able to spend a year conning Trump into believing Mueller was about to exonerate him at any moment.

Donald Trump is just that deluded and gullible. Roger Stone knows it. It’s why Stone is now so upset with Trump. Stone is, at most, a few weeks away from being arrested and he knows it. Meanwhile, Trump is over here playing Tiddlywinks with himself instead of trying tactics that might actually save him and his crew.
