After a nearly month long disappearing act, shrouded in one lie after another, Melania Trump has finally reemerged into public view this week, appearing at a FEMA briefing today. When we heard last night that this had been placed on the schedule, we knew this had to be some kind of distraction stunt, as it made no sense for her to be participating in such an event. Sure enough, in an apparent attempt at a distraction, Donald Trump is now staging a surreal meltdown about her disappearance – but he’s given some things away in the process.

First we’ll post Trump’s Twitter rant about Melania, then we’ll talk about what it means: “The Fake News Media has been so unfair, and vicious, to my wife and our great First Lady, Melania. During her recovery from surgery they reported everything from near death, to facelift, to left the W.H. (and me) for N.Y. or Virginia, to abuse. All Fake, she is doing really well! Four reporters spotted Melania in the White House last week walking merrily along to a meeting. They never reported the sighting because it would hurt the sick narrative that she was living in a different part of the world, was really ill, or whatever. Fake News is really bad!”

To be clear, the media didn’t report any of these things. Even as the public was floating a number of theories on social media about Melania’s absence, the media went out of its way not to accuse her of having had plastic surgery, or accuse him of having abused her. In fact, when some on social media mistakenly believed Melania had changed her Twitter location to New York City, it was Palmer Report who fact checked it and determined that she had not made any such change. As far as the four reporters who spotted her, the most likely reason for them not to have reported it would have been that the White House asked them not to, and they obliged as a courtesy.

It’s been clear all along that Donald Trump was never in control of the Melania Trump disappearance narrative. It grabbed headlines at a time when he was trying to sell the public on the notion that his obstruction of justice antics were legal, meaning that her disappearance did hurt him. But now that she’s finally willing to show her face again, he’s clearly trying to take control of the narrative by falsely accusing the media of a number of things, and painting himself as the victim. But there’s more to this.

Donald Trump suffers from a notorious case of projection. Whenever he’s doing something wrong, he projects that behavior onto his adversaries by accusing them of being responsible for it. Now that he’s falsely accusing the media of having accused him of physically abusing Melania, his own words here are probably the most direct evidence to date that he does abuse her. Donald has made a mistake here by putting this topic on the table for discussion. In addition, it’s clear that he’s desperate to distract from the bombshell he thinks is about to land – and he’s willing to exploit his wife’s disappearance to try to create that distraction. He’s reached a new low.
