Back when Vanessa Trump first filed for divorce from her husband Donald Trump Jr, it came at nearly the exact same time Special Counsel Robert Mueller subpoenaed the financial records of the Trump Organization. It raised questions about whether Vanessa may have been moving to protect her share of the assets before they could be seized. It also raised questions about what Mueller was expecting to find about Trump Jr’s activities in the Trump Organization. But today things suddenly became much more clear.

As Paul Manafort and his attorneys file one motion after another in an attempt at getting the mountain of evidence against him thrown out before his trial, Mueller and his team have been fighting back by revealing why they’ve done some of what they’ve done. Manafort is now trying to question Mueller’s authority to raid his home last year, arguing that it was outside the purview of the Special Counsel. Mueller is responding with a new court filing making clear that the real reason for the raid was that Manafort participated in the Trump Tower meeting with Russian government representatives.

That meeting, of course, was spearheaded not by Manafort but by Donald Trump Jr. So now we know that Mueller isn’t just poking around in the Trump Organization’s financial records to see if Trump Jr might have left criminal fingerprints on any of the company’s numerous shady real estate deals over the years. Now we know that Mueller is squarely targeting Trump Jr for his role in the Trump-Russia plot to alter the outcome of the election, and that he’s been targeting him since at least last summer.

Suddenly it makes a lot more sense that Donald Trump Jr’s wife is looking to bail out of the whole mess. It was notable that she hired a criminal defense attorney to help her with the divorce, suggesting that perhaps she was expecting to have to fight for her share of the assets in criminal court. In hindsight, this all now makes a whole lot more sense.
