Sarah Huckabee Sanders received quite a bit of attention during yesterday’s press briefing when she said that she “can’t guarantee” that there are no tapes of Donald Trump saying the N-word. That created so much controversy, it nearly overshadowed the fact that she told a rather ridiculous lie about another matter during the same briefings. Nonetheless, she ended up apologizing on Twitter for that lie, calling it an error – but then told another lie about it during her apology.

Hours after Sarah Huckabee Sanders falsely claimed that Donald Trump had created more African-American jobs in a year and a half than President Obama had in eight years, the White House Counsel of Economic Advisers opted to publicly take the blame, tweeting its apologies for having supposedly given her the wrong numbers. Hours after that, she posted this tweet: “Correction from today’s briefing: Jobs numbers for Pres Trump and Pres Obama were correct, but the time frame for Pres Obama wasn’t. I’m sorry for the mistake, but no apologies for the 700,000 jobs for African Americans created under President Trump.” That would be fine, except it’s still untrue.

It turns out President Obama added about three million African-American jobs during his time in office, according to Labor Department figures looked up by CNN. This means that even if you’re the type who likes to give people the benefit of the doubt in general, there is no longer any way that Sarah Huckabee Sanders can claim this was an honest error. If that were the case, then she would have made sure she was stating the correct numbers when she issued her apology.

As it now stands, there’s no doubt that Sarah Huckabee Sanders was flat out lying the first time around, and that she used her apology as a mere excuse to float a different lie about the same thing. What stands out here is that she was willing to admit to having said something false at all. She constantly lies on Donald Trump’s behalf, and she never bothers to correct it, even when she’s called out for it. Now, in a span of one day, she refused to lie about Trump and the N-word, and she admitted that she’d said something untrue. Something is afoot here.
