Yesterday the New York Times published an article which tried to make the case that Michael Cohen will end up flipping on Donald Trump. The article quoted Trump associates, Roger Stone and Sam Nunberg, who both made negative remarks about the relationship between Trump and Cohen. This morning Trump exploded about the article, in a manner that was deranged even by his standards, throwing one of the two associates under the bus.

Trump slammed the article by insisting that it relied upon “non-existent ‘sources’ and a drunk/drugged up loser who hates Michael.” This created a whole lot of confusion about just who Trump was attacking. Maggie Haberman, the author of the article, initially replied with a tweet which seemed to hint that Trump was attacking Stone. But later she spelled out in a tweet that Trump was referring to Nunberg, and not Stone, because Trump is “too aware of what Stone could do to him to be that direct.”

Preet Bharara then asked Haberman, “Donald Trump is afraid of Roger Stone?” She replied with “For years.” It’s long been widely reported that, despite Trump’s denials, he frequently speaks on the phone with Haberman and gives her information. So it’s reasonable that she would be in a position to know that Trump is afraid of Stone. The big question, of course, is why.

There are a dozen or more Donald Trump associates who can sell him out to federal prosecutors for his election crimes, his financial crimes, and his obstruction of justice crimes. Some of them have already cut plea deals against him. So why is he more afraid of Roger Stone than the others? We’ve seen that Trump worries more about things like the Pee Pee Tape and his Stormy Daniels affair than he does about the criminal charges he’s facing. This tells us that Stone, a man who has lived a checkered life and has been friends with Trump for decades, must know Trump’s most embarrassing personal secrets. Stone will have to plead out in the end, so we can count on it all coming out eventually.
