The question of “What’s wrong with Donald Trump” is one which will be debated by historians and psychologists for generations to come. Medical professionals have stated from afar that they’ve seen clear signs of everything from sociopathy to malignant narcissism. Whatever is specifically wrong with him, it’s not only getting worse, the rate of his psychological breakdown is accelerating. Today was one of the most timely reminders yet.

Trump began the day with yet another racist rant about immigrants and Mexico. But this one was different. For months, even as he’s been using an executive order to try to sabotage DACA, he’s falsely claimed on Twitter that he was a proponent of DACA, and that it was the Democrats who were somehow against it. This morning, however, he decided to move on from the charade by announcing that “Republicans must go to Nuclear Option to pass tough laws NOW. NO MORE DACA DEAL!” The trouble: no one knows what this means.

No really, no one is even sure how to interpret this. The New York Times threw up its hands and settled for writing this: “It was unclear whether the president’s tweets represented any change in his immigration policy, or were just the sort of venting he is known to do after reading a newspaper article or seeing a television program.” In other words, Trump’s public rambling is now so thoroughly far removed from coherence or reality, no one has any idea whether or not he just announced a change in policy.

It’s not even clear if Donald Trump remembers that he had been pretending to be a DACA proponent, so he could pretend the Democrats were anti-immigrant. Whatever Trump had been hoping to gain from that particular lie, which was never clear to begin with, he just threw it away by coming against DACA. And of course DACA only applies to people who have already been in the United States for several years, and would have no bearing on people currently coming across the border. If Trump ever did know what DACA was, he clearly no longer does. He’s not only in the midst of a psychological collapse, it’s accelerating.
